PETECTUNICH, ACANCEH, YUCATAN, MEXICO – THE EDUCATIONAL COMMUNITY OF THE NARCISO MENDOZA SCHOOL HAS RECEIVED SIGNIFICANT SUPPORT TO STRENGTHEN CARE FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS. THE DIRECTORS OF THE SCHOOL, LOCATED IN THE COMMUNITY OF PETECTUNICH, HAVE MANAGED THE INCLUSION OF REGULAR EDUCATION SUPPORT SERVICES UNITS (USAER), A PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES SPECIALIZED ASSISTANCE TO CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES, LEARNING PROBLEMS AND FAMILY DIFFICULTIES.
IN ORDER TO EFFECTIVELY IMPLEMENT THE USAER PROGRAM, WHICH INCLUDES THE PROVISION OF TRAINED TEACHERS, PSYCHOLOGICAL THERAPIES AND GUIDANCE FOR PARENTS, STUDENTS AND TEACHERS, THE ADAPTATION OF A SPECIFIC SPACE WITHIN THE SCHOOL WAS REQUIRED. IT IS IN THIS CONTEXT THAT THE JORGE MARÍN FOUNDATION HAS INTERVENED DECISIVELY.
THE FOUNDATION CARRIED OUT A SERIES OF SUBSTANTIAL IMPROVEMENTS IN ONE OF THE SCHOOL'S CLASSROOMS, MEETING THE NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS TO HOUSE THE USAER PROGRAM SERVICES. THE REHABILITATION WORKS INCLUDED:
1. COMPLETE RENOVATION OF THE APARTMENT.
2. DEMOLITION OF A DIVIDING WALL TO EXPAND THE SPACE.
3. RESTORATION OF DAMAGED WALLS.
4. OPENING OF TWO NEW WINDOWS TO IMPROVE VENTILATION AND NATURAL LIGHTING.
5. EXTERIOR FINISHING OF THE WALLS.
6. FILLING AND INSTALLING A FIRM FLOOR INSIDE THE LIVING ROOM.
THESE ACTIONS HAVE NOT ONLY PHYSICALLY TRANSFORMED THE SPACE, BUT HAVE ALSO OPENED NEW DEVELOPMENT AND LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS. THE INTERVENTION OF THE JORGE MARÍN FOUNDATION HAS BEEN FUNDAMENTAL IN ENABLING THE NARCISO MENDOZA SCHOOL TO OFFER A MORE INCLUSIVE EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT THAT IS ADEQUATE TO CURRENT DEMANDS.
WITH THESE IMPROVEMENTS, THE USAER PROGRAM WILL BE ABLE TO DEPLOY ITS SERVICES IN AN OPTIMAL MANNER, PROVIDING THE NECESSARY SUPPORT TO STUDENTS, PARENTS AND TEACHERS, AND THUS STRENGTHENING EDUCATIONAL QUALITY IN THE PETECTUNICH COMMUNITY.
