Throughout 2023, the Jorge Marín Foundation will be collaborating with the Nezahualcóyotl School in Cuautitlán, through artistic activities.

Since March, different artistic projects have been carried out, such as the sculpture workshop so that boys and girls become familiar with the concept of three-dimensionality in art. In addition, they are taught how to sculpt, showing them the work of Jorge Marín as a reference so that they become familiar with his work, mainly with the sculpture El vigilante, which is relatively close to this school.

This is a psycho-social support workshop in which participants work with a cloth doll that they personalize, and who becomes their companion in their migrant journey or wherever they may find themselves. Displacement is especially sensitive for children, as they leave behind their homes and familiar environments that represented safety.

Patria migrante is a campaign that provides a voice to the migrant population. It highlights national identity and demonstrates that while the “Homeland” may appear to be distant, it is in fact, not so far away: it is present in the faces, lives and dreams of those who live across the border, and who nevertheless continue to form part of us.

The activity invites reflection on Mexican-ness; it encourages the interaction of families from both countries in daily and accessible spaces, such as in public transport. With each phrase and each image, this campaign highlights that the Homeland exists beyond borders. We are all the Homeland, Here or there.

This activity aims to use art to raise awareness among children of current issues, such as global cultural diversity, and to encourage creativity and generate understanding of interculturality. The workshop encourages active participation, through the exploration of a graphic representation technique from the Wixarika culture. It offers insight into the various indigenous Mexican cultures, using works of contemporary art, such as Jorge Marin’s Wings of Mexico, as a common thread. It promotes and fosters collaboration, teamwork, and integration.

Arts education is a method of teaching that develops capacity, attitudes, habits and behaviours, tools and skills. It is a means of interaction, communication and expression of feelings and emotions, that enables the integrated development of a person. It develops various parts of the brain, impacts happiness and is a tool through which to develop social and emotional competencies.

For the Jorge Marin Foundation, it is crucial that art is understood as a tool that strengthens people and enables their growth. This has given rise to a series of videos in which the sculptor narrates a legend regarding a particular Mexican animal while sculpting the animal in clay, in order to awaken the interest and stimulate the creativity of children. This series was undertaken in collaboration with UNICEF Mexico.
